Terms of Use
Last updated October 23, 2026
1. Who we are
Recognize It (recognizeit.org) is run by Recognize It, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company ("we," "us"). By using this site, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
2. Education only, not professional advice
Everything on Recognize It, including the wheel, the pattern pages, the self-reflection questions and the resource directory, is general education about patterns of coercive control.
It is not a crisis service, and it is not counseling, therapy, medical, psychological, safety-planning or legal advice. It can’t assess your situation, and the self-reflection questions are not a diagnosis or a measure of danger.
Using this site does not create a counselor–client, attorney–client or any other professional relationship. For advice about your own situation, please talk with a trained advocate, counselor, attorney or other qualified professional.
3. In an emergency
If you are in immediate danger, call 911. For free, confidential support 24/7, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788. We don't monitor this site and can't respond to emergencies.
4. Your safety and your decisions
Only you can decide what is right and safe for you. Leaving or confronting an abusive partner can increase danger, so we encourage you to plan with a trained advocate.
Someone may be able to see what you do on your phone or computer. Our quick-exit button and Esc key leave the site fast, but they don't erase your browsing history. See Get support for tips on staying safe online.
You are responsible for the decisions you make. We are not responsible for any action you take, or don’t take, based on information on this site.
5. Other organizations and websites
We list and link to hotlines, organizations, books, podcasts, videos and other resources so they are easier to find. We are not affiliated with them unless we say so, we don’t control them, and listing them is not an endorsement or a guarantee of their services.
Phone numbers, hours and websites change. Please confirm details directly with each organization. We are not responsible for the content, privacy practices or services of any outside website or organization.
6. Accuracy
We work to keep the information accurate and current, but we can’t guarantee that it is complete, correct or up to date. We may change or remove content at any time without notice.
7. Who owns the content
Power and Control Wheel and Equality Wheel used with permission of Domestic Abuse Intervention Programs, Duluth, MN. Recognize It is independent and not part of DAIP. Recognize It is not owned, operated or endorsed by DAIP unless DAIP says so.
All other text, design, images and the Recognize It name and logo belong to Recognize It, LLC. You are welcome to share links to this site and to print pages for personal use or for helping someone you care about. Please don’t copy, sell or republish the content without our written permission.
8. Using the site responsibly
Please don’t use the site in a way that harms others, breaks the law, or interferes with how the site works, and don’t use its content to monitor, control or harm another person.
9. No warranties
The site is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or that the site will always be available or free of errors.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Recognize It, LLC and the people who work on Recognize It are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental or consequential harm or loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site or any resource it links to. Some places don’t allow certain limits on liability, so some of these limits may not apply to you.
11. Changes and governing law
We may update these terms from time to time. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the site means you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
